About Sore Throats

Sore throats can strike at any time of year, but they are particularly prevalent during winter. They are one of the most common winter ailments with more than one person in ten suffering at any given time. The condition is most often seen in children and young people, however, it can occur at any age.

Throat infections often occur during a bout of influenza (often referred to as flu) or a common cold. They can originate from hands that can pass the infection from person to person or highly contagious airborne droplets which are often spread when we cough or sneeze. Sore throats are caused by viral or bacterial infections. The symptoms will not usually persist for more than five days, however, if they last for longer we would advise you to contact your doctor.

Rarely, a condition called oral thrush, a yeast infection of the mouth, can result in a sore throat. It is more common in babies, people wearing dentures, those taking steroid tablets, asthmatics taking regular inhaled steroids and people with immune disorders. Products containing miconazole nitrate, such as DaktarinTM Oral Gel can be effective in treating this condition. However, we would recommend that you contact your doctor if you are unsure of your diagnosis.

Types of Sore Throat

An infection can affect the general throat area (pharyngitis), the tonsils (tonsillitis) or the larynx (laryngitis).

Pharyngitis

The majority of sore throat conditions are in actual fact pharyngitis. An acute soreness of the throat is experienced due to the inflammation of the general throat area (the pharynx).

Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis simply means an inflammation of the tonsils. It is more common in children and young adults and can occur when the tonsils become inflamed as a result of a viral or bacterial infection. The condition is usually transferred through dust or droplets in poorly ventilated areas.

Laryngitis

This is caused by an inflammation of the larynx and can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Irritants such as alcohol, tobacco or putting too much strain on the voice can also trigger this condition.

Steps To Help Prevent Sore Throats

  1. Drink plenty of fluids.
  2. Use a scarf to keep your throat covered – research has indicated that a cold and dry airway or nasal passage may encourage viruses to multiply.
  3. Watch out for air conditioning or central heating that can dry out your throat.
  4. Keep your room humid – this can be achieved by placing a damp towel over a warm radiator. A dry atmosphere irritates dry throats and the delicate nasal passage making them both more prone to infection.
  5. Eat healthily and exercise to help maintain a good immune system.
  6. Consider giving up smoking if you are a smoker.
  7. When using inhaled steroids be aware of the risk of oral thrush.
  8. If cycling, think about using an anti-pollution mask.

Daktarin Oral Gel contains miconazole nitrate, always read the leaflet. Ask your pharmacist for advice.
